Hi Bambi ....

I have just finished reading your excellent column on "Behond single searches - How shared searches can create an audience" over at Marketwatch.com

I will check your two video interviews after sending this note to you. You wrote: (bottom half of page two)

"if someone knew what I cared about, they might help me ask the right questions in the search box. For instance, I've had to do half a dozen searches to find the weight of a certain carbon bike frame made by Giant. I didn't know what question to ask, really". (I'll get back to it later, ok?)

Bambi .....I have quickly learned (through Looksmart) that most times, I am now no more that just “two” or, maybe “three” clicks away from all the information I need and on the topic of my choice. I don’t have to remember 181 different sites. (Looksmart have 181 Vertical sites, now).

You should try this, yourself. Use any major portal and always use the search term (brand ?) of “FindArticles on…… .” ……….. I choose five topics at random & searched on Google. I applied "FindArticles on Hobbies", for my test. (Note: FindArticles is one word)

Hobbies - Ford Cortina cars - Fishing - Holidays & Pets

Whilst there were about 2,050,000 results for FindArticles on Hobbies, I actually found what I was looking for, on the very 1st page of results. (This figure has dropped down to about 861,000 for FindArticles on hobbies today? I wonder why?)

http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial_s&q=FindArticles+on+hobbies&btnG=Search&meta=

There were 80,600,000 for the single search term of, “hobbies”, would you believe!! (Well, there were just 3 days ago - They have since almost halved them to about 42,400,000 for hobbies, today). At any rate, that’s “exhaustive” search, going through them all, to find what I was after. (I may even be getting results from Google Australia? ..... or, china?)

I choose LookSmart Hobbies - Best results for “Children’s Games”. I was really after something for my grandkids, that they could possibly take an interest in.

And “bingo”, I found what I was looking for! The third result!! On page one, too!! (Well it was there, the other day).

Bambi, this result has now disappeared from the other day, would you believe!. Anyhow, I choose Looksmart's Hobbies & with a click on children's games, was then provided the same "children's games" page result, as above.

I found that Hobbies was part of Looksmart’s Home Living (cluster) Vertical. I even checked out their “see what others found useful” SHARED PAGES feature to find heaps of useful information. Try it yourself.

So Bambi, in your article, where you wrote:

"I've had to do half a dozen searches to find the weight of a certain carbon bike frame made by Giant" I went ahead & applied my latest 'fad' search term with a ....

"FindArticles on carbon bike frame made by Giant" on Google, for this result.....

http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=FindArticles+on+carbon+bike+frame+made+by+Giant&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

I then selected the 3rd result (Looksmartcycling.com) and placed you search term in the box (top right)....

http://www.looksmartcycling.com/p/search?free=1&qt=carbon+bike%20frame%20made%20by%20Giant&x=13&y=11

As you hadn't nominated what 'certain carbon bike frame' you were after, I went no further....Hope it's there!
